ONE NIGHT LONELY

Universal Music Group
In the thick of lockdown, Powderfinger reunited for the first time in over a decade for a one-off performance: One Night Lonely. No crowd. No noise. Just five bandmates, each isolated in different locations, playing as one. The broadcast wasn’t just a reunion—it was an iconic cultural moment in Australian music. Intimate, nostalgic, and inspiring.

Directed by Jeremy Hancock and Marty Moynihan, the creative approach was deliberate and high-voltage. Multi-split screen editing cut with purpose—shifting rhythmically between each member’s home studio. The aesthetic was highly polished, yet emotionally grounded. Every beat, every transition, was calibrated for impact. The direction didn’t just support the performance—it amplified it.

‘A decade after Powerfinger disbanded, the online reunion was a triumph of songwriting drama and technical production’
- The Australian

The broadcast streamed across YouTube and major digital platforms to over 1 million viewers at home, raising $500,000 AUD for Beyond Blue and Support Act. It reminded a locked-down nation of something familiar—and how far music can reach, even in silence.

“It was a rollercoaster of emotion.”

Zan Rowe, Double J

“From the first few seconds of opener 'Bless My Soul', I was a pig in mud. It was as if they’d never left.”

Declan Byrne, triple j

“It was hard to believe Powderfinger were not playing in the same room; indeed, if you closed your eyes you could easily have been playing one of their albums.”

Andrew Stafford, The Guardian
